Boost to the Districlima sustainable heating and cooling network with the new Bogatell plant

The new Districlima Bogatell plant will mean a 33% boost to the capacity of southern Europe’s largest urban heating and cooling network. Through an investment of 47 million euros, this network cuts fossil fuel energy consumption by 90% compared to conventional systems.

Located in the neighbourhood of Poblenou, the new plant is built underground to fit in with the urban environment and entailed an investment of 47 million euros. It generates highly efficient cooling through the use of seawater. Thanks to this technology, the system offers a 90% reduction in t fossil fuel energy consumption compared to conventional systems. In 2025 alone, Districlima avoided the emission of 36,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

Districlima is southern Europe’s largest urban heating and cooling network, an infrastructure that provides service to some of the city’s key facilities, including the Hospital del Mar, the Glòries shopping centre, the Museu del Disseny, buildings in the Fòrum area and numerous business, education and technology facilities in the 22@ district.

Urban heating and cooling networks are highly efficient system for producing heat and cold based on the use of renewable or residual resources, which bring refrigeration or sanitised hot water. They concentrate the generation of energy in highly efficient facilities to distribute it to connected buildings. They reduce the need for each building to have its own heating and cooling systems and improve energy efficiency, maintenance, the use of space, the reduction of emissions and the heat island effect.

This project comes as part of the Climate Plan.
